Too many times plan officials struggle to grasp the complicated concepts of the retirement plan space. While at a retirement industry dinner which also included individuals from other professions, I overhead an elementary school teacher ask a retirement plan individual what they did for a living. Without hesitation that person mentioned all the things they did using jargon and acronyms that only those in the industry could understand on their best day. With a confused look on his face, the teacher said, “What does that mean?” Further trying to explain, the individual tried to simplify their pitch but it was still confusing to the teacher. The questions and explanations continued for a few minutes and finally, the individual was able to breakdown the basics of his day to day job.
Many times in our industry we speak in a manner that results in us speaking at someone instead of to someone. The industry “language” is tough to grasp from someone on the outside looking in.
